Streets ahead in taste test
8:00am Friday 12th March 2010
IT’S official – Stockbridge High Street has the best food in the country.
The rural village high street was voted the best foodie street in Britain in the Google Street View awards.
The High Street, which runs right through Stockbridge, was praised for its many independent specialist shops, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants, many of which serve local produce.
The Google Street View awards, voted for by the public in a nationwide poll, are a celebration of Britain’s best-loved streets.
Stockbridge faced tough competition from 19 other streets in the UK but stormed to the top in its category.
The rural high street was nominated by the food and drink editor of Metro who praised it for its eclectic mix of tea-rooms, delicatessens, its world famous butchers and acclaimed eatery The Greyhound.
It also regularly hosts a range of food events during the year such as French and Italian markets and the popular Trout and About festival.
Google will now create a special online tour of the High Street, highlighting its foodie hotspots.
Cllr Janet Whiteley, chairman of Stockbridge Parish Council, is delighted the High Street has been recognised.
“It’s a tremendous accolade for Stockbridge from Google, who are world renowned, to put Stockbridge firmly on the foodie map,” she said.
“Congratulations to everyone involved in raising people’s awareness of this competition and congratulations to Stockbridge for having such a great selection and choice of eating places.”
