Battling Whitchurch share the spoils

2:54pm Wednesday 30th November 2011

WHITCHURCH boss Jim Macey was a happy man after his side’s 1-1 draw with visiting Portchester last Saturday.

Macey said: “It was a really entertaining game which was end to end and great to watch. I was not unhappy with the result even if it would have been nice to get three points.” In the first half the visitors had two great chances, while ’Church man of the match David Asker fired over the bar a couple of times. Portchester took the lead after the break then Tom Hindmarsh tipped over another effort. With ten minutes left, Whitchurch equalised as Nicky Jupp rose at the near post to head home Hindmarsh then made a double save to keep the scoreline level and substitute Andrew Charsley nearly stole the points as he hit a beautiful left foot volley which left the keeper stranded and thumped off the post.

Then Asker saw his 20-yard shot hit the bar as the game ended 1-1.

Tomorrow, Whitchurch have another tough game as US Portsmouth are the visitors and on Tuesday they face local rivals Andover New Street in the semi-final of the North Hants Senior Cup. Looking ahead to the games, Macey said: “Games against the Navy are never easy, but I have a few players coming back which is good. Then we face New Street and that is not going to be easy as both sides will want to make the final.”
