Sudden death victory

1:22pm Wednesday 8th February 2012

The first competition of the new year for Andover Golf Club saw Jodie Gibson, recently returned to the club, in fine form winning the January stableford with 37 points and gaining a handicap reduction from 11 to ten.

Runner-up was the ever consistent Lorraine Collis with 33 points.

The Ladies were hoping to emulate last year’s success when they reached the sixth round of the National Mail on Sunday knock-out competition. The 2012 first round draw gave them an away fixture at Test Valley and the team of Mandie Scott, Angela Rogers, Jodie Gibson, Sue Davis and Jade Scott all had well fought games with the match position standing at 2-2 after the first four matches had been completed.

Jade, team captain this year, playing off a handicap of eight, had elected to play the anchor role. A birdie three at the last hole by her five handicap opponent resulted in a halved match giving a deadlocked match position of 2.5 - 2-5. Under the rules of the competition this forced a sudden-death play-off by the final pair and they were shot for shot at the 19th hole but Jade held her nerve to sink a six foot putt to secure a 3-2 win for the team to go forward to the next round.
